  • Is there a reason you do not tier positions? I am in a 12 team ppr league, could you create a tier sheet of your recomendations for the first seven rounds and a list of sleepers to look for in later rounds? A BIG THANKS IN ADVANCE!

  • Russ:

Hi John. I am abou to draft my first PPR fantasy team. Generally I would fill a flex with a RB but with the PPR format does it favor starting a 3rd WR or do you prefer starting a 3rd RB still? I like to stay flexible during drafts and generally look for the best value pick, but is there a general draft strategy you would encourage me to impliment in a PPR format that would be different from standard formats?

    • John Paulsen:

Typically, RBs are more dependable fantasy scorers than WRs due to the way they get the ball. If you are getting ready to fill your flex pick and you’re deciding between a RB/WR, treat them as the same position and pick the guy who is projected to score the most fantasy ppg. If you can start three RBs, then generally it’s a good idea to do just that.

  • What round do you recommend picking a rb/wr flex position in a ppr league?

    • John Paulsen:

It depends. If you have a starting lineup of 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, flex, TE, I’d be looking to fill my flex as early as round 3 (if you start RB RB RB) and absolutely no later than round 7.

      • Tyler:

Would u really consider going RB/RB/RB in rds. 1-3 if the right guys fell to u? This is with a Flex obviously. Would u be nervous about being shallow at WR??

  • Russ:

My same group of guys does a standard league format that i drafted a few weeks ago. I generally like to wait on a QB. I was the 2nd to last guy (in a 12 team league) to draft Josh Freeman in the 11th Round. I picked up Fitzpatrick with my last pick (we hold 17 on our roster). In a PPR format does it make MORE sense to wait on a QB like i did in the standard format? Or do you still recommend trying to get Big Ben in the 5th/6th round?

Do you have a top 200 rankings for PPR? Or do you just have them separated by position at this point?

    • John Paulsen:

Freeman in the 11th is outstanding value, as was Fitzy in the 17th. Waiting on a QB is a great strategy this year with all the depth. Fantasy owners are in great shape IMO with Ryan/Freeman/Schaub, or even Eli/Cutler.

  • brent:

john,is there a way to print out your rankings to take to the draft ??? were doing a manual draft this yr due to the commish having a lousy connection and no wireless network in place :(

  • Tyler:

If an owner picks McFadden, what rd do you take Bush?

  • Ben Schmidt:

Hey John, 4for4 subscriber here ;) . Am I crazy to see top 10 upside with Reggie Bush? I don’t disagree with your ranking of him, but he looked so good the other night and Chad Henne is so bad it might help him. He could catch 80 checkdowns this year!

    • John Paulsen:

It’s not nuts, but Bush is not to be trusted. He’s fine as a RB3 in PPR formats that you enjoy for a while until he gets injured. He’ll be RB2/flex worthy as long as he’s healthy.

      • brent:

alright so i end up with 3 rbs in the 1st 3 rds,i went dmac at pick 6 rd1, wanting wallace in rd 2 but mccoy is sitting there,so i grab mccoy as my rb2 over wallace as my wr1 ,then rd 3 rolls around and damn, matt forte is sitting there ???i couldn’t believe it but thought about it for a second about my wr situation but how do you turn away a top 10 rb in ppr in the 3rd rd ??? i end up with mike williams tb as my wr1 rd4 and santonio as my wr2 rd5,shaub as my qb rd6,steve smith carolina as my wr3 rd7,jimmy graham as my te1 rd8,santana moss as my wr4 rd9,lance moore as my wr5 rd10,tolbert as my rb4 rd11,fitz as my qb2 rd12,greg olson and my t/e2 rd13

watcha think, this was a 12 team ppr league

        • John Paulsen:

You did the right thing. Value, value, value. You are fine at WR, especially with terrific backups like S. Moss and L. Moore.

McCoy in the 2nd in PPR is highway robbery – I would have taken him in the 1st.

          • brent:

gotta a question:should i drop tolbert to grab m.bush to back up dmac ??? or should i just stand on what i got ??? we are roster limited to 4 rbs or else m.bush would be my rb5

thanks for your advice and help as always, will be joinin 4×4 next week,on vacation right now

          • John Paulsen:

            I’d hold onto Tolbert. He’s a fine RB3.

        • Tyler:

Do you play in a league with a bunch of dummies?

          • Jezmund:

hahaha..thats what I was thinking…McCoy and Forte are 1st or 2nd round picks and some of those other players went WAAAAAy to late.

  • russ:

    Hi john,
In ppr w/flex I have Brady, cutler, cj2k, dmac, deangelo wil, beanie wells, wayne, maclin, julio jones, meachem, crabtree, graham. Mendenhalls owner is wanting to trade for cj2k. With the holdout, what are your thoughts? Do I have enough depth to roll the dice and keep johnson or should I be considering trade options??

    • John Paulsen:

Please see this. Doesn’t hurt to listen to trade offers, but you could roll with DMC/(Wells or DeAngelo) for a couple of weeks if need be.

      • Russ:

Thanks John, I am on 4for4 as sirswagsalot. same ppr league Ive been offered clark and forte for cj2k. My current TE is graham. Should I make the trade? our flex option allows for rb/wr/te.

        • John Paulsen:

I don’t see you as one of my referrals — I wouldn’t do that trade if you already have a good TE like Graham.

          • Russ:

I dont remember seeing a prompt to list a referral. I only signed up for 4for4 because of your help this far. I would be happy to send an email to whoever so that you get credit. Let me know

  • matt:

    hey john,
i am curious to hear your thoughts on what i should do with foster. im in a ppr league. i have Brees, foster, bradshaw, nicks, dez bryant, steve johnson, jahvid best, witten, mike thomas, fred jackson. what do you think i should do with foster? should i look to trade him or wait and see how it goes. also, if i keep him, would it be worth it to pick up ben tate??

  • Matt:

what if I could trade foster for chris Johnson? do you think I should do that then?

  • Steve:

Congrats on the title! How do you feel about strength of schedule? I know you like McCoy in the 1st, Looking at just SOS with guys like DMC, Mendenhall and Gore having favourable SOS. PHI has the bottom 5 SOS for the year and last weeks 14-16 during my fantasy playoffs. Do you still go with McCoy in a Half PPR league?

SJAX plays PITTS week 16, championship week for me. Do I still draft him in the 2nd over guys like Forte, Turner, Blount just be looking at SOS?

    Thanks,

  • Stefan Byramji:

Hi there! Thanks for turning me on to 4for4! Great Site and hope you got a referral for me (I used your link).

Anyways, I did not draft a kicker and have to drop a RB to get one. I don’t really have any studs, but I am stacked with depth (Shonn Greene, Forte, Ryan Mathews, Fred Jackson, Tolbert, CJ Spiller and Deji Karim). EVen though it is a keeper league, I was going to drop Spiller or Karim, and leaning towards Karim. I am worried because he has excellent upside as MJD’s replacement in case of injury. Your thoughts?

    Thanks!
    Stefan

  • Stefan Byramji:

    Hi John,

Separate league, my first auction draft ever, and I BOMBED it. Lack of experience totally came through… Went cheap with studs and tried for depth, ended up with a totally uninspiring roster. To make things worse, I had to drop someone I spent decent money on to pick up a kicker. Was on the fence between Tolbert and Addai, and dropped Tolbert thinking Addai should get more wear with Manning out.

I want to right that wrong, but am not sure of what to bid on Tolbert. Most people have about 50 to 60 in their waiver budget, and one guy has 100. I have 59. Tolbert is by far the most attractive name on our waiver wire (12 teams, 16 roster spots, 2 QB 2 def).

Can you hazard a guess as to Tolbert’s value?

    Thanks!
    Stefan

    • John Paulsen:

If you don’t have a minimum bid (i.e. you can pick up guys for $0 the rest of the season), I’d drop the full $59 on Tolbert.
